When it comes to a big move, research is everything, and researching the neighbourhood of your prospective new home is one step you can’t neglect. An apartment could have everything you need, but if it’s too far from amenities, work, or school, it could make your daily life difficult. To help you out, we’ve created a small guide to some of our properties and the neighbourhoods they’re in, focused on Downtown Toronto, East End Toronto, and Scarborough.
Pembroke Street: The Scenic and Eclectic Garden District
As the name suggests, the Garden District is characterized by its green space. With Allan Gardens to the north and Moss Park to the south, there’s plenty of green space to enjoy in this downtown neighbourhood. With its rich history and low-rise homes preserved from the 19th and early 20th centuries, it’s been categorized as a Heritage Conservation District.
Beyond the aesthetic appeal of the neighborhood itself, it has all the conveniences of living downtown, meaning walking distance to groceries, restaurants, and transit. Toronto Metropolitan University (Formerly Ryerson) is just a few blocks away, and so is the Eaton Centre. Uniquely, there is a French elementary school along Pembroke as well for those who wish for their children to learn primarily in French.
If you’d like to live in one of the Garden District’s historical buildings yourself, you can rent a room, one bedroom unit, or two bedroom unit in one of our Pembroke houses. If you’d rather stay somewhere more modern, we also have studio apartments at 100 Pembroke.
Gerard Street: Historic Little India
Little India, also known as the Gerard India Bazaar, was founded in the 1970s. Starting as a single cinema exclusively screening South Asian films, this small stretch of Gerard Street between Coxwell Avenue and Greenwood Avenue grew into a commerce hub for Toronto’s early Indian and Pakistani diaspora. Nowadays, you don’t have to look far to find South Asian stores no matter where you are in Toronto, but Little India still holds strong as a cultural cornerstone. If you’re one for festivities, check out the TD Festival of South Asia, Eid, and Diwali celebrations in this neighbourhood.
We have one and two bedroom units available right in the heart of Little India, so those interested in living in this slice of South Asia are encouraged to book with us.
Kingston and Warden: Birch Cliff, the Suburbs by the Shore
For those who want to enjoy the beauty of the lakeshore, we have one and two bedroom apartments in Birch Cliff.
Situated between the Beaches and the Bluffs, it’s one of the earliest suburbs in Scarborough. Though it’s definitely one of the quieter neighbourhoods in Toronto, it’s not lacking in amenities, either. Those passionate about buying local should check out the City Cottage Market, a bodega stocking everything from ready to eat meals to artisan alcohol, almost all of it made in Ontario. This is a good neighbourhood for families in particular, as both the public and Catholic school boards have elementary and high schools in the neighbourhood.
500 Dawes: Woodbine Gardens, Calm and Quiet
Another quiet area in Scarborough, Woodbine Gardens is located north of Taylor Creek Park and is a part of the larger O’Connor-Parkview neighbourhood. You can enjoy a picnic and take advantage of the tennis court and golf course nearby, or you could take a short bus ride down to Danforth and enjoy the bustling arts and entertainment scene there.
Kingston and Lawrence: West Hill, Scarborough’s East End
Approaching the neighbouring city of Pickering, West Hill is a good choice for families looking to settle in Scarborough. The neighbourhood sports 9 elementary schools including one French language and two Catholic, as well as two high schools, one of which specializes in special needs education. It’s also only a few minutes away from both the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus and the Centennial College Morningside Campus to the north. Nature lovers might appreciate living in West Hill for its proximity to Rouge Valley and the Toronto Zoo. If you need to travel around Ontario often, this neighbourhood may also be a good choice thanks to the nearby Guildwood GO station.
We have two multi-level two bedroom units in West Hill for those looking for somewhere spacious to live.
